FAQ

  • We’re best equipped to serve customers from around the world when our workforce is diverse and all our employees feel supported and valued. Our D&I Committee is made up of global employees and is committed to bringing diversity and inclusiveness initiatives to Kobo, including a regular speaker series, interactive workshops, fireside chats, and educational resources. We also work with a number of external diversity partners to stay connected within the community.

  • We emphasize the importance of taking care of our well-being which includes our mental health, and encourage open communication regarding workload and expectations. All Rakuten Kobo employees are invited to regular well-being workshops, meditation and yoga sessions, and more. We also offer our employees competitive vacation packages, paid volunteer time-off, and a fan favourite, our extra-long holiday weekends in the summer to give everyone a chance to take care of their well-being. We also offer flexibility with our “Work from Anywhere" program for up to 3 months, with manager approval.

  • We celebrate wins both as small teams and as a large company, and we love to get everyone together at certain points throughout the year, such as our annual kick-off, summer party, holiday party, and our latest addition, Kobo Con. For extra fun, we host happy hours and competitive trivia contests—and you’d best be prepared, because we’re all about the prizes. We host an annual wellness week, a softball tournament, a golf tournament and individual departments typically have an annual team-building event of their choice.

  • We’ve worked hard to create a workspace you’ll be happy to come to, whether that’s every day, or once in a blue moon. Our new Toronto HQ is conducive to productivity with electric sit-or-stand desks, proper soundproofing, the latest meeting room technology to incorporate our in-office and remote-based employees and designated quiet spaces, with accommodations such as full wheelchair accessibility, a beverage dispenser with QR code, and Braille signage on all rooms. We are also working on enhancements to our Darmstadt office.

  • Rakuten Kobo offers flexibility with remote, hybrid and in-office work environments. Employees should be in the office 3 days per week unless they have leadership approval for our remote/hybrid work option. We focus on activities that make the most sense for us get together in person, and let each team decide with their manager what those activities are by creating their own team charters. For the most part, we expect new hires to be in the office 3 days a week for the 1st month with their manager and/or colleagues to ensure a smooth and successful onboarding experience.

  • Our hiring process focuses on using industry best practices to ensure fairness and equity. This includes unbiased job descriptions, hiring teams that have been thoroughly trained on effective hiring, and an interview panel consisting of leaders from diverse backgrounds, genders, and levels. Our interview process can vary depending on the nature of the role, but in general you can expect the following: a phone interview with a Recruiter to chat about your experience and give insight into the role, a meeting with the Hiring Manager to dig into your skillset and learn more about the expectations of the position and the team, and a meeting with some potential colleagues/stakeholders to get a grasp on how this position fits into the ecosystem of the department and the organization as a whole. Kobo continuously strives to offer the best possible candidate experience, which can only be achieved by upholding an inclusive culture that values diversity and inclusion.

If you want to build your tech career around making reading lives better, we’d love to meet you.
