Book full of twists and turns.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It kept me gripped so much I didn't want to put it down! The storyline is amazing and I was never sure where it would go next. Throughout the book the sense of trust in God was central even amid the pain and suffering of life. An excellent read, now looking forward to the next book in the series!

    A Winner for Sure

A Light on the Hill (Cities of Refuge, #1) is the latest novel by Connilyn Cossette. The main character of the story is Moriyah, a young Jewish girl that readers first meet in the author's Out From Egypt series. During her captivity in Jericho, Moriyah is branded a prostitute by the temple priest. She managed to escape and is back with her people, the Israelites, but she still bears the brand she received. As a result, she keeps her face covered at all times to avoid the ridicule the brand brings. And marriage? Out of the question, for who would look beyond the brand and what it means to see Moriyah for who she really is? Moriyah's father has found a solution. A widower with 2 young boys is looking for a mother for his children. He doesn't love Moriyah, but is willing to look beyond the brand in order to get his hands on the fruitful vineyard owned by Moriyah's father. Moriyah is known in her community as a wonderful cook, so her father sets up a dinner as part of the betrothal ceremony for the soon-to-be wed couple. During the dinner, something goes horribly wrong and Moriyah must flee for her life to one of the new Cities of Refuge that have been established to protect those accused of murder. Will Yahweh protect her as He has promised? It seems that he hasn't done a very good job so far, but Moriyah has no choice but to keep looking forward and trust in the God of her fathers. Her life depends on it. To say that I loved this book is an understatement. The research done by the author is quite evident in the detail found in the pages of this story. I was sorry to see this story end, but look forward to reading the next book in the series. I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author and Bethany House Publishers in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own and I was not required to leave a positive review.

Ancient historical romance for the modern reader

The Characters: Both main and secondary characters are strikingly vivid in this book. I remember their feature scenes and personality like I had watched them in a theater. (Hellooo, filmmakers in Hollywood, get with the program and make us movies of these books! Ahem.) I've tried to pick a favorite secondary character, but they're all so masterfully created, I couldn't choose. Even the wicked king of Megiddo was breathtaking to "see" in motion as I read his pages. The Romance: I'll be honest, I couldn't see a satisfactory ending coming for these star-crossed romantic leads. So much stood in their way, not to mention the small matter of their lives being in danger at almost every moment! But the author pulled it all together in a beautiful conclusion that has me wanting to read the book all over again. The Pace: With multiple lives at stake, this one's a page turner! The Faith Element: As with every Connilyn Cossette book I've read, this title did not fail to bring me to the throne room in worship of our great and amazing God. To see His faithfulness and guidance woven through the fabric of history, even when man is so faithless, brings me to tears and makes me want to serve Him better. The Author's Trademarks: Vivid imagery, research of ancient history, impossible odds and strong attraction between romantic leads, life-threatening stakes, worshipful portrayal of God as omnipotent and yet loving. The Overall Impression: I'm always awed by Conni's books. They not only send me on a thrilling, taste-and-see journey with characters I love, the lessons they portray drive me to my knees with longing to become closer to the One who made change and repentance possible. The More Factor: More! Yes, please, lots more! I recommend this authors books to everyone. *I received a copy of this book from the publisher free of charge. My review is voluntary, and the opinions expressed are my own.

Full of twists and turns - an absolute delight!

Since I had already fallen in love with a very young Moriyah in Cossette’s last book, Wings of the Wind, it was so exciting to get to read the rest of her story in this book! And as a member of Cossette's launch team, I had the even greater pleasure of getting to read an ARC of it before release day! Cossette’s writing is fabulous, full of complex and growing characters, and the plot is riveting, full of twists and turns that make this book nearly impossible to put down. This is absolutely a five-star book! There is so much to love about it! The book is told in first person, all from Moriyah’s perspective, and I must admit that there were several times that I found myself desperately wishing we could have some chapters from Darek’s perspective! I so wanted to know what he was thinking! As I said about Cossette’s Out from Egypt Series, I think readers will enjoy the fresh perspective this author brings to a brutal time in ancient history even if they do not currently believe in God. This book is actually more historical than Biblical since the Bible is fairly silent on this particular time period. I feel certain nearly every reader will find the story engaging!
