Christmas and the geese are lost...

Lady Osbaldstone has always been a presence in the Cynster novels, but as a septagenarian and perhaps older. It has been a real pleasure to see her as a relatively recent widow, just 50, looking for her place in the world now that the whirl of diplomacy has gone. A telling comment near the beginning of the book, that Lord Osbaldstone's ambassadorial role kept her from mothering her own children when they were young, lets us conjecture how Lady Osbaldstone will deal with her three grandchildren. That Jamie, George and Charlotte are extremely bright and ably take their cues from their grandmother allows the plot to move forward through the minutae of a village preparing for Christmas in 1810. The missing flock of geese provides the lynchpin which unites all classes in the village to ensure that Christmas is celebrated in the only way allowed and, indeed, expected. Different events - the carol service, the Nativity on the green, the ice skating party - all serve to reinforce the togetherness of village life and the part that each person, great or small, young or old, has to play in that togetherness. Of course, this wouldn't be a Stephanie Laurens book without a romance where the pair are brought together by a mystery which must be solved, helped along here by little constructive multigenerational matchmaking. The trope of the returned warrior, scarred and reclusive, finding the One who will bring him out of the shadows, works well here with the backing of a whole village. Like Laurens' previous Christmas offering, By Winter's Light, Lady Osbaldstone's Christmas Goose also shows us the promise in the generations ahead. Jamie, in particular, shows us that when it is time for him to assume his father's title he will be more than ready for it. I hope there are plans to bring Lady Osbaldstone's grandchildren back as adults with their own stories. In the meantime 2018 promises more Laurens storytelling which I am looking forward to with much anticipation.

    Great read

A fun read. I've always like Lady Osbaldestone, and this story of her earlier days than we usually see her was a touching Christmas tale. Can't wait for more adventures!

Lady Osbaldestone and the Christmas Goose

Anything written by Stephanie Laurens gets a 10 from me and this one is funny, whimsical, has a moral to the tale and tugs at the heartstrings.

    Sweet and spritely Christmas tale

I thoroughly enjoyed Lady Osbaldestone’s return in a book all her own, as she has been a favourite character of mine through many of Ms. Laurens’ books. I particularly appreciate that this book is devoid of sex, making it appropriate to read to and with children. It contains many life lessons for the young (in this case Lady O’s three bright and adorable grandchildren), lessons given with an understanding of child psychology, a child’s need for intelligent and challenging entertainment, and a goodly dose of humour. I read the entire book with a smile on my face. Kudos Ms. Laurens! Please let us hear more of dear Lady O.

    Lady Osbaldstone's Christmass Goose

What a delightful tale! Lady has recently returned to England after traveling through the continent revisiting old places and friends she and her late diplomat husband had been to. She's not sure she wants to stay if she's going to be bored at her downer estate. Plus her grandchildren have been thrust upon her because of an illness at home. The mysterious dissappearance of the village geese and a brooding nobleman soon bring Lady O and her grandchildren together to solve both problems gr8 a very happy Christmas.
