    Artemis

Wry humor and absorbable prose make this a quick and enjoyable read. Not quite as good as The Martian, but solid science fiction with likable characters and informative content.

    Okay, but nothing special.

After reading Andy Wier’s novel ‘The Martian.” I was really looking forward to reading his next book, ‘Artemis.’ I’m sorry to say I was a bit disappointed. In ‘The Martian’, the novel’s protagonist, Mark Watney, was an extremely likable character and his ingenuity and pluck as he battled to survive being marooned on the red planet had me completely captivated. The principal character in ‘Artemis’ on the other hand is a selfish, reckless criminal whose actions are wholly responsible for the dramas she finds herself in. I didn’t warm to her at all, and this is my principal reason for not enjoying this novel as much as the first. In addition, I found much of the writing a bit cute and contrived, and the ending was extremely unbelievable. Perhaps though I have had my opinion swayed by the quality of Mr Wier’s first novel. It was, I feel, a pretty hard act to follow. I wouldn’t say this is a bad book, but it’s certainly not as good as ‘The Martian.’

    Great Concept BUT.......

I haven't read the Martian although I did watch it (I know cardinal sin for bookworms!) So can't compare the writing. I thought the concept was good and there is scientific plausibility is on point. HOWEVER, the main character Jasmine who is meant to be 26 years old just speaks and thinks like a 16yr old! Immature, impulsive, spoilt. For the longest time I thought she was a teenager! Her superior intelligence is masked by her immature, impulsive and spoilt behaviour and language! Not good. The author clearly needs to work on his perceptions of women! Also hats off for portraying a non-white protagonist (if I can call her that!). Definitely no racism in this one!!!

    Great imaginative read

Really enjoyed the storyline. Different form anything I've read before and a nice easy read. Didn't want it to end.
