  • An interesting listen

Kind of stuck between 3 and 4 stars on this one...I would do a half if there were one, and I can easily see how it would be 4 stars for many readers. Things I liked a lot: - Davila's writing style worked for me - beautifully descriptive scenes of the ostriches, the desert, a landscape that was completely foreign to me - Sara Mollo-Christensen's narration is excellent, although at first I struggled a bit because I was so used to her as the narrator for the "Murder on Location" series that I had to remind myself this wasn't part of that series! - the ostriches! I have raised chickens for years but have never had an ostrich, although in some ways they have similarities to chickens. I really enjoyed hearing about their quirks and behaviours. - the final scene, wow! I wasn't quite expecting that! Things that were not quite as good for me: - the characters....they were well written characters, but I had trouble really relating to any of them. My family is nothing like Tallulah's family (thank goodness!) and so I couldn't really conjure up some of the characters all that well in my imagination, and I wasn't sure who to root for sometimes. Tallulah's mom, her uncle Scott, her boyfriend...they all made me mad to varying degrees and I just didn't like them very much, as people, so that made me not really want to read about them any more than necessary. For people who have family members like Tallulah's family members, I'm pretty sure this book would resonate really well. - I'm really not sure about the egg laying thing. Having had chickens....I can see the stress would have an effect, but on all of them, all at the same time? I dunno....that was a tough one for me to swallow. - unanswered questions! Argh! Yes, I know, they happen in real life too, but I like things to be answered in books.

    Thanks for your feedback!
