  • Best Ever

The best Stephen King novel ever. Captivating and full of life. I didn’t want it to end. What a story!

  • A life redeemed

There are 2 books here: the classic trope, the hired gun persuaded to take one last job. The second, a poignant, sentimental story of an unlikely couple who negotiate their relationship while racing to keep ahead of their pursuers. The two are connected by the life story he continues to write. The violent, traumatic childhood he records produces a damaged young man, alone in the world and surviving by his own cobbled-together moral code, which allows him to become the dispassionate executioner of those his employers assure him are "bad men". He realises that he has become one of the "bad men". In his companion he finds someone who reads and responds to his story, and cares for him. Though he redeems his life, its ending is inevitable. The reader, Paul Sparks, does a remarkable job in recreating a wide range of characters. King is an astute observer of middle America, but above all a teller of tales; and this is an interesting variation.
