  • Set in space

This is the type of book that advertisements put "sci-fi for people who don't like sci-fi" which is fine, just know that this is a space opera, with political intrigue at the centre. It does touch on themes of colonialism and is set in a highly imperialistic universe, but in this first book, more of a setting than something to explore. What I find "a choice" is having the story be told from a fully assimilated colonised victim. His loyalty lies with his colonisers, but at the same time aware of they're use of lies and propaganda to justify the destruction of his way of life. I'm not sure what the author is going for here. I suppose we find out in the next book. The twist, I have to say had me laughing, it plays out beat for beat like in the tv show "see." What kept me going in the end was our main characters, and the narrators voice. It's a fine first book for a series, I'm hopeful the next books will explore the ridiculousness of a galactic Empire and not just rely on emotional drama.
