  • Great learning resource for those starting out

Great format for someone diving into Mandarin, or someone who has had previous exposure before. I'm using this audiobook as supplemental material while taking Mandarin classes, and I'm finding it quite helpful in getting opportunities to practice and receive other ways to remember things. Paul doesn't cover a few things that absolute beginner would (ex. pinyin, numbers), but he does cover things like: - tones - past/present/future actions - differences in showing ability to do something (keyi/hui/neng) - use of object counters - asking and responding to questions Throughout the book, Paul does 95% of the speaking, while 2 native speakers repeat mandarin words & phrases. I liked the addition of the native speakers, as they weren't just male and female, but also from different regions, and spoke at different speeds. I will say, having already known the pinyin spelling of most of the words made visualizing/interpreting the sentences much easier. The last 1.5 hour is a review section, which I found very helpful and repeated it a couple of times already. Unfortunately the last 45min relies on a mandarin booklet which I found on the publisher's website but the link was broken. A couple things I wished they improved: including "weeks" as a time measurement (days and years are mainly used), more variations in responding to questions, better table of content structure (each "chapter" is literally the first sentence that Paul says). Overall, a highly recommended resource and I'm looking forward to Paul's Next Step course which just came out last month.

  • Learn Mandarin with Paul Noble

Using the audiobook medium from Paul Knoble, and whilst I get on with teaching method quite well, why has the publisher changed the way in which they let you know where you are in the book. The French book, shows accumulated time, which is useful if you want to recap a section. The Mandarin book only shows the section time, and the contents list often has the same opening dialogue......so you're not quite sure which section you want to be in. Not sure which came first, I suspect the French, book.....so why change a formula which for me anyway worked......!!!!

    Thanks for your feedback!
