  • Too much filler

Gods, how to do this one. Rhythm of War is unfortunately by far the weakest entry in the Stormlight Archive for me. Perhaps my tastes have changed but there's just too much padding and filler here with little enough thrust to the main plots. This is the fourth book in a five book arc of a wider ten book series which in-turn is set in a broader universe currently comprised of twelve books. While I admire the ambition and intricacy of this endeavour, each installment being 1200 pages no longer feels necessary, if it ever truly did, but rather indulgent. The flashbacks in particular didn't seem to sit right and could easily have served better as a novella rather than breaking up a book that already had pacing issues, especially since the broad strokes of these flashbacks were already known. There's also no getting away from the fact that some of the personal stories and character growth feels like a rehash of previous books, like certain characters had their development reset to push through issues again. As if the book is merely treading water as it bridges the mid point of the arc. There are big cosmere impacting moments, setup for future events, and lore drops that are thrilling but it comes down to Journey before Destination, and that journey was a slog at times.
