  • A tough read but a good one

A tough read but a good one. Shuggie’s mother Agnes is one of the great lovable monsters, or perhaps her alcoholism should get the credit. Some of the early background chapters feel slightly like workshop pieces, but once the inexorable plot gets underway there’s no stopping. Angus King’s reading is oddly slow at first but he produces a phenomenal range of different characters, all with memorable Glaswegian accents.

  • A difficult story well told

Like life in the real world Shiggie faces many painful moments but remains undaunted even when confronting the harshest of disappointments . Finding truth about the ones we love is never easy, but the story is beautifully told.
