  • A Jarring Encounter

I'm glad Tea is able to release a story during these times, with an audiobook & all, but there's a lot of room for improvement. The story guides you back into history well, even showing frustration & opportunities of the era. The two main characters, the cousins, are quite likeable & interesting & you find yourself wanting to hear their story. Some of the secondarys have basic characteristics but basically fit into 1 of 4 categories; endlessly doting on MC's, endlessly hateful, sickly/incapable or complete indifference. These can be great if used well but the result is an unbalanced, jarring story that sounds like a teacher talking to a small child. This isn't helped by the audiobook voice acting either. There's very little intonation in the reading, most of it like a deadpan poetry slam. Occasionally you'll get a character voice but they are inconsistent at best. Many times the author also assumes the audience knows exactly what's being talked about or what someone is feeling. There's a lot of run on sentences that don't allow for the audience to put themselves in the story or even pick how the characters are feeling. Angry? Confused? Upset? It's all a blur. Liberties are also taken with historical accuracy. A woman driving the roadless outback by herself? Scoffing at church, back then? Having a medical condition but wandering freely? Extremely unlikely. But if you're bored & looking for a period fiction to put your feet up to for a few hours, there are still gems here.

    Thanks for your feedback!
