  • Adventure with a public servant

I loved this book for it last characters, and the bureaucracy of the Department in Charge of Magical which lends a flash of reality into this fantasy. The ideas are great and the approach with a main character who can’t see himself for the special person he is make for wonderful themes. Add in some precocious kids and you have the perfect recipe for a fun adventure. I needed this right now.

  • Really good

I read the book several months ago (and loved it) and then listened to it as an audiobook. I liked the narrator for the most part. He’s very good at doing different voices, especially for the children. I wasn’t crazy about the narrator’s choice to speak a bit more monotone in the beginning of the story compared to the way he speaks once Linus arrives on the island, but I can see why he made that choice. I was also not crazy about the voice he did for Arthur Parnassus, but the story is great so that’s just a quibble.

  • This one wasn’t for me

I tried, but I bounced off this one hard. The book was recommended by a friend as a nice cozy lockdown book. I found it to be a little bit too cutesy - the whimsy is dialled up to 11, but the characters (especially the children) are flat caricatures. Doctor Parnassus (whom we’re supposed to find fascinating and wise.... I guess?) comes off as really preachy and judgemental of the POV character.

  • Delightful

The most innocent tale of the Antichrist I’ve ever read. The narrator is brilliant. This is just sweet from start to finish (except for the racism of course)
