  • A very compelling story

In the early 20th century, young Irishwoman Sophie Whelan immigrates to the USA and settles in Manhattan. Disturbed by the poverty and life in the tenements inhabited by immigrants, she answers a newspaper ad placed by a widower looking for a wife and mother for his daughter Kat. Accepting Martin Hocking’s proposal, Sophie takes the train to California to join Martin and Kat in San Francisco. After some time Sophie has doubts about Martin. When Belinda appears at Sophie’s home some truth are revealed. The following day, April 18, 1906, San Francisco is hit by a major earthquake causing Sophie, Kat and Belinda to flee for their lives. Sophie and Kat move in with Belinda, but questions persist about Martin’s fate. Eventually all is revealed. “The Nature of Fragile Things” is a compelling story about fortitude and resilience. A great read!
