  • Absolutely heartwarming

This novel is wry and shrewd and loving. All the characters are well developed and relatable. Each of the four lead characters is working through difficulties that necessitates letting go of toxic secrets and old habits that are keeping them from growing as people. There are some absolutely heartwarming stories. One of my favourites is the elderly man who is finally able to reunite with his now middle-aged gay son who he threw out of the house because of his homophobia seven decades ago. The novel is filled with such gems. Pekkanen is a solid, well-established writer who knows her craft and plies it well. Madeleine Maby is one of my favourite narrators and she gives real life to this audiobook. Listening to it is a satisfying way to spend a few days.
