The male lead saves the book

I liked the prose and the world. There are some interesting dynamics with the magic and interesting cultures. The book isn't bogged down by back story. Like the first book, I found the female lead weak. She needed more to do, have more internal and external conflicts to solve and find ways of empowering herself. It's the male lead that made the book, gave it life and depth. He was strong and humourous and drove some of the plot. There are concerns with the pacing of the book. The major plot points seem to have written too fast without giving the reader a satisfactory reason as to how the characters reached that conclusion, or how they freed themselves. Major moments of tension fizzled because of a quick resolve. The sexual tension doesn't sparkle. In part because the female lead is rather weak/lacks agency. Overall, it's an alright book. It had the potential to be so much more. That said, I will get the next book in the series when it becomes available.
