Enjoyed listening, was engrossed, horrified and almost threw my device.

  • Never expected

OMG!!! Never expected to be a great book. The narrator was excellent. Slow at first but gradually builds up the character. Done in 2 days..

  • Creepy book

Starts out cosy then surprises you with scenes you won’t soon forget and a pervading sense of menace throughout. Usually I listen last thing at night before I sleep, but I had to turn this one off as it was too scary!

  • two incongruous books in one...

OK, so full disclosure... I have read some of the [author:Charlaine Harris|17061] Sookie Stackhouse Series... and yes, even enjoyed their light nature... which is what I was looking for in taking a long 36 hour round trip drive... AND so was drawn to the review which aligned this book series with Sookie... This at times compelling book is NOT Sookie Stackhouse... it is deeper, harder, and though there are some engaging horror scenes it is far more compelling AND hard for having us live out in some small way the systemic misogynism... and racism of the 1990's... I found myself crynging far more from the way women and people of colour are treated in this at times hard to read book than the horror plot which is the foundation for its social statement... so why 3 stars, if well written and hard? and really I think it's because the title and premise trivializes the very profound social message the author is sending... so either use the writing skill for good and send the message OR write something fluffy that fits the title... BUT don't try to seduce the market and then speak the important message to an unsuspecting and unprepared audience... there are times when I really need to reflect on these important messages... but not when I pick up a book called "guide to slaying vampires".. I will learn and be more receptive if I willingingly come to the topic... perhaps that makes me narrow.. but I would read either book, just not at the same time...

    Thanks for your feedback!
