I have to read this book 2 more times but my first go around was listening to the audiobook and it was well-read and acted. I like that Sydney’s story is at the center and even though Theo is a support, he doesn’t take over as a hero. As for the thriller, this is more a tense mystery and the horror mostly occurs outside your perception which is unfortunately very realistic. I applaud the writer for being able to condense modern issues and amplify the horror realism while staying close to the truth. Theo is the perfect stand-in for the everyday person of any background who hears the complaints but doesn’t really see the people who suffer. Loss of community is a real problem and losing history is dangerous because as the characters point out, history repeats itself. A cycle of taking and trauma. This is not the best book if you’re dealing with grief or depression because our main character is deep in both. Well-written and thought provoking this book reminds me a lot of Lovecraft Country in that the real horror is in how our society gets away with treating people terribly.

    Thanks for your feedback!
