  • An Unfortunate Disappointment

What can I say, not a favourite 😕. My hopes were high due to the premise but more so the LGBT+ married couple. However, I was disappointed and instead of 5 stars, I struggled. Let’s talk about the good parts: 1. Kiem - I really enjoyed his character. He was easy going, funny and had great energy. I enjoyed his perspective and the banter or funny comments that spilled out of his mouth. He tried to be as sweet and thoughtful as he could to Jainan and seemed like a decent husband. 2. Bell - She was my second favourite character due to her snark and the hilarious relationship she has with Kiem. I wish I could have a Bell in my life. 3. The storyline regarding Taam - what we discovered about him and the mystery of his death were intriguing and kept me reading more than anything else. Now for the bad: 1. Jainan - Sadly I found him stale and uninteresting as a character. What he went through and how he was effected by it were understandable, however, his core personality I just didn’t jive with. I struggled through his POV and got frustrated with his inability to communicate often. Which brings me to my next issue. 2. The miscommunication trope for half of the book. Oh boy was this a struggle to get through, this trope is one of my pet peeves and it annoyed me for 200+ pages. I did not enjoy reading this part of the plot and I nearly DNF’d several times. If I didn’t have the audiobook I don’t think I would’ve made it through. 3. The Romance - this hurt me, I was hoping for this to be done well with angsty getting to know each other after being forced into a marriage and electric chemistry as feelings developed. That’s not what I got, there was barely any chemistry until 60% through the book and even then I wasn’t feeling it. 4. Boredom - The premise was great but the plot was slow to get to the point and boring for most of the book. The 30% from page 250 was when things got really engaging and compelling, this was the part I enjoyed most and then it sadly dragged again for the last 20%. The audiobook was the saving grace for this one, the narrator did a commendable job of bringing this story to life and making the reading experience better.

    Thanks for your feedback!
