  • Boring first chapter

I read one chapter and found myself thoroughly uninterested. The boring action writing and the sudden onset of unmotivated magic makes this feel like a cheap Hollywood flick.

  • Takes time to rev up but worth it.

Perplexed by reviewers who couldn't be bothered to even read the book before spouting off I opted to take a chance as I quite liked the synopsis. I too was a little surprised by the magic element when I expected a more traditional sci-fi but accepted it as a sort of steampunk flavour and found myself getting drawn in and becoming invested in the characters. I would say the writing style feels a little light in places as if it is aimed at a younger audience, but on top of that there are some grueaomely violent details that suggest otherwise and lend a sense of genuine peril to the characters. The plot becomes more detailed and intriguing as it progresses and further layers of planning and betrayal are revealed, the characters stretching their ingenuity and struggling to accept and overcome brutal losses to figure out what they are tangled in and how they can deal with it. Overall the book does seem to have a shaky start where direction is unclear, but it is worth persevering to get to the meat of the story. I enjoyed it, and will be interested to read other novels by the same author.

    Thanks for your feedback!
