  • God doesn't want you to understand

There is certainly room for a sophisticated, point-by-point critique of Reza Aslan's Zealot: The Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth. This isn't it. King first argues that Aslan has no right to accept some parts of the Bible and reject others, which means that no textual criticism is possible on any basis (inherent credibility, agreement among the different gospels, lateness of tradition, etc.). Then he pulls out the ultimate rebuttal, which is that God is intentionally confusing the unchosen among us. This is, indeed, backed up by some Gospel verses! However, if God decided against my understanding the Gospels correctly, it seems arrogant of King to try to correct Him.

    Thanks for your feedback!

  • Read Both Books

I read Zealot first then this book in order to have a balanced, researched knowledge bank to develop my own opinion. I know I'm only a marine engineer and not an historian or theologian but i dont believe you can counter researched, cited and referenced material by regurgitating dogma and rhetoric without even attempting to disguise your work as academic. I was looking forward to reading this book but really, really struggled to finish it.

    Thanks for your feedback!
