  • Second time's the charm

This is the second novel in the series and a worthy follow up to the original, and in my opinion an improvement. As with the first book G.R.R Martin shows himself to be a thoroughly adept writer and brings originality to the genre and excellent characterization. He builds a large world filled with complex stories and complex characters. It feels like you're on a journey with these characters and the author does a fantastic job of bridging fantasy and realism and keeping everything feeling organic. The writing style of Martin's is a very descriptive one but it works well in terms of bringing the locations and people to life and allowing your imagination to make them real. I also felt, having read this straight after the first, that it also was a better book. I feel this is written with a little more disipline than the first. This helps the pace quicken, not much, but just enough for it to feel a shade more exciting and I felt it was a more visceral book than the first. It isn't perfect, hence the 4 stars and not the 5, but it is a fantastic book and if you took anything positive out of the first one (and I would really recommend reading these books in order) then you'll take something from this. After having this read not only was I happy as a reader but it made me even more eager for the next one. Finally a well done to the technical folk who have formatted this brilliantly for eReaders. • Very good story

So, for 4 stars or 5 stars? It's not getting 5 stars only because it's the second book in the series. As a stand alone, it's awesome. This series had better finish though. I can only hope Martin is not trying to give us a further dose of unpredictable "real life" by dying suddenly, like his characters are wont to do often.

  • Terrific

The book was just as enjoyable as the tv series I’d would recommend it to anyone to read it.
