  • Fab historical romance !

In this exceptional historical romance, we are treated to the story of Kate, forced out of her comfortable middle class existence to the shadows of thievery by the demise of her father's shipping company and Daniel, an alcoholic who fled a false accusation of murder, abandoning Kate in the process. Now recovering from his alcoholic addiction, Daniel is determined to restore his good name and rebuild his relationship with Kate - if he can convince her that he has changed and is worthy of her trust and her love. There are so many aspects of this book that I loved that it's hard to know where to start. The setting of the story is original and unique, completely unlike any other regency romance I've read. Instead of the typical ballroom scenes, high born lords and ladies with perhaps a dash of the lower elements featured, this takes place entirely amidst the lower class, the thieves, beggars and prostitutes, the people struggling to make a living and stay afloat in a world that cares nothing for their situation. The attention to detail in the setting - the language, idioms, images and descriptions of everyday life bring the reader fully into the story and into the daily life of the average man and woman. No small detail is overlooked, from the description of clothing, to the buildings, streets and everyday actions of the poor and their struggle to survive. Yet it is not told in a depressing manner but rather with a matter-of-factness that enables readers to immerse themselves into the life being lived with no apologies. Kate has been forced into the rookeries through the bankruptcy of her father's company coming as a direct result of his defence of Daniel, an employee of his company, accused in the murder of a fellow co-worker. When Daniel fled the charges, her life turned upside down - her father died, she was left destitute and she is eking out a survival for herself serving as a fence for stolen goods. Her character is expertly written as a strong confidant woman who will do what she must to survive. She has learned to rely only on herself and that trusting no-one is the only way to move forward. She is courageous, daring and suffers no fools. Then there is the character of Daniel. Such a flawed hero! He knows fully that his addiction to gin has cost him everything - his good name, his employment, his relationship with Kate, and his complete memories of what happened the night a man was killed and he was blamed. Knowing that running away was the only option to save his neck from the hangman's noose, he abandoned Kate to her fate and continued down the path of alcoholic destruction until his memories of Kate haunted him into an epiphany that he must give up gin to save himself. His re-emergence into her life is the beginning of the story. He knows how much his betrayal has cost her, and how much he must do to redeem himself in her eyes. I loved the portrayal of his character, his continuing struggle with alcohol as would be realistic for any recovering alcoholic, his shame over what has happened to Kate and his attempts at forgiveness and redemption. He is dogged and determined to prove his worth once again. The two characters together have an explosive sexual chemistry. From the very first pages their attraction to each other is undeniable and while Daniel wants to deepen their existing relationship, Kate fights the memory of their lovemaking, creating a delicious sexual tension for the reader. The author is skilled at building this tension and the ensuing and inevitable love scenes are steamy and well written. Secondary characters in the book add flavour and dimension to the story. The suspenseful plot carries the reader along at a fast pace as the mystery of the murdered man is uncovered and the danger to Kate and Daniel increases. Readers will find themselves unable to put the story down as it races to its completely satisfactory conclusion. In summary, this historical romance has everything I would want in a story - excellently researched setting, wonderfully realistic flawed characters, steamy love scenes, fast paced action and an overwhelming feeling of complete satisfaction at the end of the story. Knowing there will be more novels in the Rookery Rogues series is icing on the cake. 5 fabulous stars! Favorite Quote: 'I cared about you Daniel, I would have run away with you.' Those thoughts rose up, gossamer threads to be snipped by rusted scissors when she remembered their place.

Enjoyable reading. Characters were well described and storyline interesting - not just a love story. Looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

  • Good book

It took a few chapters to get me hooked but once I did it was hard to put down. I like the combination of romance and action/mystery. Also like that parts carry over to the next book so even though it's a new focus you still get bits of how the previous characters are.
