  • An OK Read

3.5 Stars This book had me invested from the first chapter. The psychological aspect was what I call anxiety inducing, kept me wanting more and had me turning pages. I just about suspected every character of lying at some point and enjoyed the unreliable narrator theme and I loved the surprises along the way. This is a plot driven story and it worked for me in that it kept me wondering throughout the entire book. That's what I want in this type of story. The characters were relatable and human, making mistakes and being flawed. The main character, Kate's, secrets were palpable but I don't think her fear was evident enough but perhaps that was misdirection on the author's part. Overall a solid read. When the secret was revealed I berated myself for not figuring it out but I that is a demonstration of the author's storytelling talent. There is a lot going on in this story. Kate is pregnant at forty-five, a man from her past is back in her life and she is hiding something from her husband, her mother has secrets as well and a stranger is sending her threatening text messages. These sub-plots thrown into the mix weakened the main story-line...so for that reason I round down instead of up.

  • A suspenseful psychological thriller

Once again I find myself singing the praises of a book from Ruby Speechley. A Mother Like You is the third psychological thriller that she has written and is another outstanding read. I was completely gripped by this story, that is fraught with so much tension and kept me right on the edge of my seat. I found the plot intriguing and it is not often that you read a story featuring a middle aged woman who finds herself pregnant, which makes for a refreshing change. It is a complex tale that has many layers to it and I enjoyed them being peeled back and taking me by surprise as the story progressed. As always, Ruby Speechley’s writing is impeccable and her character’s are first class. She has you invested in them and each brings out different emotions within you. The plot is tightly woven, the pace is fast, the twists are compelling and the ending satisfying. A Mother Like You is a dark, addictive and emotionally charged read. It consumes you and takes you over until you have read that final page. Ruby Speechley is such an exciting voice in the psychological thriller genre and I am looking forward to reading what she comes up with next.

  • Fascinating!

This is a fascinating take on motherhood and the ramifications of choices made down through the generations. Each of the main characters has a BIG secret that they have not yet disclosed to one another. Although they have a happy marriage, it is one which is planned strictly with no room for error. That is until Kate becomes pregnant at age 45 which throws everyone into a tailspin. A really tightly written and tense read!
