  • Get ready to binge your favourite new fantasy

From first chapter to the end, I was pulled in and held there by the way A Song of Wraiths and Ruins is so good at dual-narration and using it to create the tension that keeps you reading. It was like giving an anime a 3 episode try and then realizing you binged the whole thing in two sittings. Crushing on the enemy can be difficult to pull off, but it works in A Song of Wraiths and Ruins. Brown does an incredible job of showing us the part of the world that both Malik and Karina exist in—bringing depth and compassion to their individual challenges. Both POVs allow for the characters to be flawed and hurt and struggle, but they also get to be victorious and confident and powerful. You know when you get to the end of a book and you're like I'M SO PROUD OF YOU at the characters? Yeah. Everything from characterization to action reads like it was effortless, but a special mention of chapter two: When Brown introduces Karina is one of the best Meet This Character scenes I've read in a long time. Definitely Top Ten of 2020 so far, and I'm very excited to read book two and then see what else Brown does after this duology.

  • A Beautiful Debut

Actual rating, 4.5! I've had this book on my TBR list for so, so long, and it did not disappoint! This is a powerful, complex story with two complicated and unconventional main characters, a beautifully written world, intense action, and head-spinning twists. Brown's literally voice is exceptional and I am excited to see where she takes the next book! I absolutely loved the world. I've never read anything like it before, a world steeped in folklore and fantasy, which immediately enthralled me. I never wanted to leave it! The lore becomes vital to the story later on, and adds to some serious complications for our heroes. I really liked the characters, though Karina could get quite intense and aggressive at times. As for Malik, that poor sweet boy absolutely owns my heart. Both characters have noticeable emotional weaknesses, but instead of treating them as such, Brown makes these weaknesses into strengths, particularly in Malik's case. It makes them an unforgettable duo, even though I think their relationship moved a little too quickly for my taste. That said, fans of love at first sight or star crossed lovers will adore this challenging romance! The twists were spectacular. I honestly would love to know how Brown intends to top them! This book was absolutely worth the wait and is a must have for all lovers of complex characters and spellbinding fantasy. Do not miss out!

  • Get Your Fantasy Fix

The author took the typical fantasy tropes and turned them on their head. Wonderful book. I can't wait for the sequel.
