    Deeply thought provoking

Took some time to get into the story but a deeply thought provoking, sometimes tragic but ultimately an engaging read.

    Zen and Complexity

Absorbing writing which unfolds / folds layers of possibility and complexity as it goes, and doesn't skirt some serious historical and current-future moral issues.

    Breath of fresh air

A highly original plot with main characters being well fleshed out. From the narrative of the great grandmother to that of the author one cannot help but feel the experiences described. Spanning different cultures and time periods through the last century an imaginative tale is deftly woven

    A compelling read.

I loved this book, the way it explored a clash of cultures and moved between stories, the story of the young girl who returns to live in Japan after her father loses his job in the US and the story of the author on an island off the coast of Canada and the message in the bottle. I really learned a lot about Japanese culture from this work.
