A Very British Crime by Lucy Worsley

The evolution of the Whodunnit from the Broadsheet to the bookshelf sheds a different light on its popularity. It also mirrors the fortunes of women within society in its discussion of the Golden Age. It pay tribute to the fscination with news, the bizarre and the rise of science as part of the rational approach. I found it very informative read.

Not bad, but the best bits aren’t original

What I didn’t know before reading is that a lot of this book is based on Judith Flanders’ The Invention of Murder: How the Victorians Revelled in Death and Detection and Created Modern Crime, so if you’ve already read that you’ll get a lot less out of this book. It does cover subjects not included in Flanders’ book, notably the ‘Golden Age’ of detective fiction, but to me this was less interesting than the earlier material about the pre-Edwardian public fascination with murder through ‘penny dreadfuls’ and music hall. Not a bad book, in all, but the best of it is already covered elsewhere.

    Unexpectedly interesting

I was expecting quite a different book but for all that the contents were unexpected, I quite enjoyed it. Subject was interesting and well researched and presented.
