  • Such fun!

Riley has created a joyous romp through the 14th century, playing with forced marriages, wicked husbands, wise women, travelling players, mystical visions and even the Black Death to tell a tale of adventure and narrow escapes. Unusually her protagonist is female, which adds to the perils and the sense of fun.

  • One of my all-time faves

Read this for the first time many years ago, and just bought it on Kobo because my secondhand paperback version is falling apart. Full of wit, humour, and well-drawn characters, and despite the lightness of style the author does not gloss over the dirt and cruelty of those times, particuarly for women. Margaret is one of my favourite fictional characters.
