  • Emotionally Erratic

I got this for free in a giveaway. For the most part I enjoyed it: Drew and Ash had very compelling back stories and good chemistry, and their work at the clinic is very worthwhile. However, I did feel like the emotions in this story were all over the place. Drew adjusts to his feelings for Ash startlingly easily, given that he thought he was straight all this time, then later suddenly reverts to an earlier point in his opinion of Ash for no reason I could see. When they argue, their wild swings through who is mad and for what reason are enough to give a person whiplash. The worst part though was how the last quarter completely changed the entire emotional tone of the story. Prior to that all the tragedy happened off screen in the backstory and all of a sudden this one event defines the book. Something with that level of severity should be in the beginning of the book so that the characters have enough space to deal with it and come out the other side. Which leads me to my other problem with the last quarter - the big event wasn't about Drew and Ash. It was about a side character, basically setting up their tragic back story on screen in preparation for them getting their own story. It was very jarring and I came away unsatisfied. If that's the way this series is going to unfold, I'm not going to continue.

    Thanks for your feedback!
