  • Huckleberry Finn

I always wanted to read this book. I am otherwise not really familiar with M ark Twain. The book was an Interesting read but really by today's standards, it was very racist in description and treatment of one of its characters , Jim a black 'Nigger' as described in the book. This is not a reflection of its Author however. Mark Twain apparently was a great man whose interests were in favor for women's rights and social equality and black rights. The book reflects a time where blacks were treated and used as slaves that didn't even measure up to the fine treatment of most dogs. The language used in the book reflects a few different dialects, one of which was 'black speak' as I call it and a Southern drawl. If anything this story should be read as a price of informative history of a time that reflected great prejudice and shocking treatment of human beings. The narrative is a bit childlike in a southern dialect as it is told in first person view from a 15 year old boy. Mark Twain, however said that he wrote this story for Adults to read and not for children. This book has been banned in quite a few schools due to its apparent racist tones.
