  • A rollercoaster of emotions

Once again the best author in his field has taken his loyal readers on a rollercoaster of emotions. I remain convinced that he has shares in a well-known brand of paper tissues! This story interweaves the experiences of a young man, Hubert Bird, leaving behind Jamaica to set up home in the UK, and in the process finding the love of his life, but also a lot of prejudice. How he and his wife overcome that together is woven through the story. Hubert has experienced a lot of grief in his life, and has become quite reclusive. But he realises that this has to change for the sake of his daughter as well as himself. Enter Ashleigh, who turns Hubert’s world on its head, and between the two of them they decide to try and do something about the loneliness of people in their community. Needless to say, there are some setbacks, plus some ‘I did not see that coming’ moments in the story which keep you wanting to turn the pages, especially towards the end. This novel has had a real impact on me, because I have realised that, whatever happens, I do not want to end up in Hubert’s situation.
