  • Great read. Atmospheric, well researched.

One of my favorite authors. Thoroughly enjoyable read. Ending definitely leaves me wanting to read the next Bess Crawford mystery.

    Thanks for your feedback!

  • An Irish Hostage!!

Love Charles Todd books, esp. with Bess Crawford. was hoping that Bess and Simon would get together this time but at least there is a chance they will and another book! Very good read.

  • Enthralling & absorbing mystery

This was another wonderful book by the mother & son writing team known as Charles Todd featuring Bess Crawford. I loved this book. I found it both powerful and moving and thought that it did an outstanding job of trying to explain some of the tensions and problems from many sides of “the Irish question” after the Rising of 1916. The settings and dialogue, as always in a Charles Todd book, were enthralling and captured my imagination. The story was both character and plot driven and the suspense was riveting. Would Bess be able to safely attend the wedding in Ireland of a former Sister colleague? Would the wedding even occur? Would the prospective couple and their attendants be able to leave safely? I highly recommend this book to fans of any of the Charles Todd books, readers of historical fiction and in particular British and Irish history post WWI and in particular to anyone who loves traditional and/or historical mysteries. Although there is no need for the reader to read any of the prior books in this series to follow the story or characters, I think that the experience would be enriched if the reader at the least checked out the novella A Hanging at Dawn that immediately precedes this book in publishing order. It does a fabulous job of explaining how Bess and Simon became interconnected. I have so appreciated both the content of the books in this series and the relationship between Bess and Simon and I am eagerly awaiting the next book in the series.
