  • Problematic, but cool space stuff

so first off the positives, i like the universe, and McCollum's approach to space flight is great. He really put's a lot off effort into the science approach to it all. Unfortunately there are two huge problems, that really stand out in this novel and are not resolved in his sequels. Problem one is the pacing. He is all build up with very little pay off, in the first book you are waiting until the last couple of chapters before there is any real proper space fighting, most of the novels real-estate is taken up by people walking or floating through doors. The second, and arguable bigger problem with the Antares universe is the treatment of female characters. He seems to approach them with an almost 1960s style, where they spend the entire series trying to look pretty and put on cocktail parties. I get the sense he got that feedback because he really tries during the second and third books. Finally letting women join the space fleets, though always to some scandal. I really never imagined, as a male reader of scifi, I would get too worked up about this but i got to the point where i was skimming over a lot of the sections with women, because they were all so cringeworthy. it was too the point i had to check the publish date, but no it was 2012. really couldn't find like one female to run it by first?

    Thanks for your feedback!

  • You’re going to want to read this

After a slow build of key characters, the story accelerates at light speed to a well written battle scene. The enemy looks to be formidable but not IV invincible as human spacers work to outsmart them. I’m ready for book #2

  • Awesome sci fi

Action, suspense, adventure in a really out of this world place. I found the characters engaging and likable, really made me rooting for the good guys.
