    Pretty good yarn

The best part of this book is the insight it gives into everyday life in Eastern Australia in the last half of the 19th century. Although the facts about bushranging (Australian term for "bandits") are generally well known in Australia, there is some tension in the way real events are related which makes the book very readable. The only jarring note is the mistake of using modern language (I can't imagine a bushranger in 1861 "packing heat" for example) but the book is a pretty good yarn nonetheless.
