    Not another Legend

The infuence of Gemmel is obvious but I found the story a bit cliché and the characters, especially the bad guys, lacking depths. Furthermore it gets in this annoying fantasy trope of creating races and giving fancy names without explaining them or giving context, as if it were enough to create a new and interesting world. Works but not great

It was the fight scene in the begining tha got me hooked. I spent the rest of the book waiting for it to reach the same level but it never did. The main flaw in the story is that it jumps in time and leave big parts out giving a feeling of a summerised story. There are never time to really get to know the characters and the parts where you do seems a bit too sterotypical and flat. This book might work for a younger audience but not for me unfortunantly. The book is not bad, just not great either.

    Enjoyable, but unrealistic magic battles

Balfrus is portrayed as the main character, but I think Vargus is by far more interesting in this story. Balfus' background story doesn't add up and isn't given to the reader in a way that makes sense. Also the magic battles are weird and don't make sense. For example, in one of the battles at one point the enemy is nearly defeated and the hero is preparing to finish it. The next moment the enemy has plenty of shields again and the hero suddenly needs to work with all his might. And this just happens without explanation. To summarize: I enjoyed the story but not so much that I'm going to buy the next book in the series.
