  • Before we were yours

This book is written so well. Its a very sad subject but very interesting and the story is weaved together in a way that makes it hard to put down.

  • Shook me to my core

The author succeeds in creating the atmosphere and feel of carefully safeguarded secret, so much that it makes me hesitant to read when the truth starts to get revealed. I really feel like I’m prying into other people’s secrets, things that are none of my business. Then I remembered that this is fiction, but it doesn’t exactly feel like it. At the end of the book I found out why: Tennessee Children’s Home Society was real. The character running the ‘adoption’ operation in the novel, Georgia Tann, was real too. Before We Were Yours is the story of fictitious characters going through what real kids, real souls have actually gone through in the past, in the hands of Georgia Tann. It’s terrible. I read these things in the news but Before We Were Yours offers a more personal point-of-view that is heartbreaking. This is the reality for more kids than we can imagine. Lisa Wingate shook me to my aching core.

  • A good story spoilt!

Apart from part of the book having a predictable, cheesy love story component that could have been left out, the rest of the book was ok.

  • Beautifully written

Poignant and beautifully written - I read this in its entirety in about four sessions, as I couldn't put it down.
