  • Blast from the past

I hadn’t read chris brookmyre since he was called Christopher. I read and loved Quite Ugly... when it first came out and then bought and read all CB’s books until I got bored. This must be the first one I’ve read for 15 years and I loved it. Very much a fan again

  • Twisting, investigative thriller.

So, to be completely honest, you should know that I am a huge Brookmyre fan and reread his books regularly. His narrative voice is compelling and sometimes sly. Supporting characters are believable and nuanced, and, as with a 'classic', their lives echo and parallel the dilemmas of the central cast. The author is fascinated by humanity, and while aware of our flaws, still fond of us in our imperfections. There may be fewer laugh out loud moments here than in some of his other works, but the novel is also less overtly violent or gory. If you like plot twists, manipulation and deception, this is your book. NB, for Brookmyre neophytes, there are no psychopaths or serial killers here, nor tortured police pathologists. Neither does the Scottish author present charming rural characters, misty landscapes or whisky scented hearths. There are small servings of social and political commentary, usually alongside a big helping of plot, don't worry, you don't have to know about British politics or history to enjoy this book.

  • Strong whodunit

Very interesting and strong storyline only criticism was that it felt somehow American, I had to keep reminding mysrlf it was set in Scotland. That aside it was a very good read.
