  • Good but not great

This is not a typical Grisham novel. It is more of a character driven piece. It lacks the tension and suspense of his usual work. But it was a quick read that was reasonably interesting. Not sure it’s worth the price being charged but if you’re a fan of Grisham you could pick this up if there is a sale and you most likely enjoy it.

  • Beautifully written character piece

This is not a typical Grisham novel. Neely Crenshaw was star quarterback for the Messina Spartans '84 to '87, under notorious and successful coach Eddie Rake. Neely returns to his small town, 15 years later, as the coach is dying. All the players do, from teams across the decades that Rake coached, to pay tribute to the man who moulded them. This is not the plot driven thriller that you might expect from John Grisham. This is a character piece. A novel of past motivation and present melancholy, on fleeting youth, choices made as young men, lost careers, legends and heroes, and high school football. Recommended reading for anyone who enjoyed Friday Night Lights.
