  • Caraval

The thing I liked most about this novel was the idea behind the story. I can say I liked the book, also because its fluency allowed me to immerse in the story, but once I finished I realized that many things were not explained, leaving me with many doubts about the plot and the characters. The main characters don't have characteristics that make them particular or peculiar, but they are described just enough to understand the reason of their actions. The biggest problem is the rest of the characters, because we don't know nothing about them, they appear in scenes and then disappear immediately after. I don't want to give a higher rating to this book because I find that some elements are missing in the story to make the reader passionate, not just to the story but also to the characters and the world created. I would have liked to know more about Caraval and its artists, understand why or how of their presence, understand how this world was made, since is mentioned a subdivision in Empires, the reason why Legend instead has a small island in the middle of everything and under nobody's rule. I understand give the information "strictly" necessary to understand the story but I think a little more details wouldn't have been bad. I hope for a more intriguing and explanatory sequel.

  • Unique, unpredictable & magical

I would describe Caraval as a blend of Alice in Wonderland with The Hunger Games, which is very different from the fantasy/urban fantasy books that I usually read. Scarlett and her sister, Tella, enter a legendary game called Caraval in order to escape their cruel father. Scarlett believes that the game is a magical performance, but when Tella disappears, it becomes a dangerous race to save her sister. It took me a while to warm to the characters and the writing style, but once the game began, I became intrigued and fascinated. Though at times it felt as if Scarlett was wondering around in a maze, and everyone but her knew the rules as she desperately tried to follow the clues that will lead her to Tella. It was original and creative, with many twists and turns, and I had no idea who was the villain and who was Scarlett’s ally. I loved how the island’s magic amplified the senses and altered time, making it an unreal, otherworldly experience. I hesitate to reveal any more about Caraval, as the pleasure is in the journey itself - unearthing the mysteries and revelations. It is the type of book that it is best to know nothing about before reading. If you enjoy unique, unpredictable, magical stories where nothing is as it seems, with a taste of romance, a large dose of sisterly love, combined with a brutal father and a mysterious fiancé, then you will love Caraval.

  • Just missed the mark

It was an easy read yet a captivating world. It could have been grandiose but I thought that the characters were a little cliche and fell short of feeling real.
