  • Great read

I love this book, I first read it a few years ago and returned to it due to there being a new film. The story is incredibly sad but beautifully written.

  • An engaging read

At first I found this book hard to get into. Not because of the story but because of the layout of it. The story is broken up by articles reporting on the ‘Carrie White incident’. These articles are set after the end of the story and are dotted throughout the story. They act as flash forwards, showing the reader the consequences of the event before we actually see the event. At first, this was confusing to me and I found it hard to keep track of everything. But as I got more comfortable with the layout, I found it to be quite nice as we are getting snapshots of what is to come, yet we are still surprised when we read it. The reader is encouraged to have a lot of sympathy for Carrie as she is bullied and tormented. We see the effect of this on Carrie and feel deep sympathy for her. However, we also begin to feel sympathy for Sue. Although she joins in with the bulling at first, she tries to atone for her mistakes throughout the rest of the book, which leads to her gaining sympathy and respect from the reader. I enjoyed the story; there was a lot of emotion and sympathy surrounding Carrie and I found the description of the telekinesis interesting. I would have liked a little more exploration on the impact of the events on Sue and how she carried on afterwards, but overall, this book is an engaging read once you get used to the layout of it.

    Thanks for your feedback!
