  • Fantastic!

historical-figures, historical-places-events, history-and-culture, aviation, newfoundland, family, small-town, kindness, LGBT, nonfiction, early-21st-century, musical***** On September 11, 2001 the town of Gander, Newfoundland showed the people from all over the world who were suddenly marooned in a place not of their choice that they had integrity and selflessness as well. Events in the US caused an emergency order for all planes in or headed to the US to land immediately. This meant that the town of Gander, Newfoundland pop. 9000 were suddenly hosting 67 planes and nearly 7000 stunned travelers for 5 days. This is the story of a select few and the development of a grand musical COME FROM AWAY that is even now on Broadway. I loved that the audio is narrated by THE AUTHOR!

  • Love your neighbour

A few years ago my cousin's in-laws were visiting for Christmas from the US when they had to leave their house under an evacuation order due to encroaching bushfires; they came to my sisters' home and, during a conversation with my cousin's father-in-law, he mentioned a book he had finished before coming to Australia. It was The Day The World Came To Town. Intrigued, I decided to search for this book. On Kobo I found not only that book but this one as well. While the first book undoubtedly contributed to some of the vignettes in the stage production of Come From Away (the rabbi and the 'lost sheep' comes to mind), this book, from Kevin Tuerff's own memories of those frightening, eye-opening, gratitude-filled days on and in the immediate wake of 9/11, and the turn his life took in paying it forward, are heart-warming affirmations of the triumph of the human spirit over adversity through the simple adherence to the Biblical principle of loving one's neighbour. This book is inspiring and encouraging, giving us a glimpse into how the way of life in Gander and the way the townspeople there and in the surrounding communities look after each other would grow to encompass the more than 6000 frightened people who suddenly found themselves there. That the book then goes on to talk about the way Gander continues to welcome those in need says so much about these generous people. There is further inspiration in the way Mr Tuerff describes his way of paying it forward by encouraging his staff to honour the memory of lives lost by helping others remember kind deeds and in the way he suggests how we too can pay it forward, especially now, two years into a pandemic when fear and isolation have become more marked. With theatres beginning to open despite Omicron, masked, double-vaccinated and socially distancing, I finally got to see Come From Away and Kevin T - it was hard to believe there were only twelve people in the ensemble cast because of their dynamism and sheer joy in telling such an important story, and the clever use of coats, hats and props to switch from being locals to become 'come from aways'. What a brilliant way to bring Mr Tuerff's story and the stories of others who were there to life and remind us of our humanity at such a terrible time.
