  • Beautiful prose

Heyer’s genius is not the originality of her stories but in the beauty of her prose and the breadth of her vocabulary

  • Disappointing Heyer

I’ve read all Georgette Heyer’s novels, mostly while I was in my teens and twenties. In general, I love them, and revisit them as comfort food every so often. I couldn’t remember much about this one, though, and I know why. It’s boring. It’s heavy handed with the Regency slang. The heroine has only a minor role - we end up with no idea why the hero has decided he’s in love with her. If we are to enjoy a romance, we need to be able to identify with the heroine, but in this one we can’t, because the story is told entirely from the viewpoint of the hero or his brother. Badly structured and boring - but wait, I’ve said that already. Finally, it’s hard to believe Georgette Heyer wrote this one at all - perhaps she was getting old and was losing her grip on her formula. Try another one before you judge, though.

    Thanks for your feedback!
