  • Fascinating

I didn't expect to be gripped by this but I couldn't put it down. Ordinary people who were involved in the Chernobyl disaster, either because they lived nearby or because they worked there, give their unvarnished accounts of the tragedy and its aftermath. It also sheds a light on how people will defy danger to stay in the places they love and reveals the lies and incompetence of the authorities.

  • This book touched my soul

What an insight into the real Chernobyl. This book gave me a deeper understanding of the people and culture. Everyone should read this and learn from it. Since Chernobyl, we have Fukushima spewing death into the Pacific. These disasters show the world has no borders. Our planet is ours to care for, no matter where you live. But what I took away most from this book is the intellect and poetry of people who have endured such loss, pain and guilt. They touched my soul. Thank you.

  • An essential account of history

This was a beautiful and harrowing account of the fall out from Chernobyl as well as a fascinating insight into the Soviet mindset and culture.

  • Must read

Having seen the HBO series Chernobyl, I was interested to find out more. This book was a revelation of the resilience of people, the lack of concern with the fallout, and the silence/misinformation from the government at the time. One to add to your reading list!

  • Outstanding

After reading this book I changed my mind regarding the «eternal» meaning. We should never forgot Chernobyl and never let it happen again.
