  • Totally engrossing!

Sarah Woodbury's newest book is yet another testament to her formidable talent. She is managing to juggle three series with great skill. Each series has its own unique flavour and unforgettable characters. Chevalier is just the second book in her Welsh Guard mysteries (read Crouchback first if you have not yet done so). It is a fitting follow up to the very fine first book and I think I like this one even more than the first. I was fascinated by how she created personalities for many historical characters while seamlessly weaving in her fictional characters (whom I like very much). I was also very interested in the social mores, rules of honour, and intricacies of rank and social position at that time. Plus the mystery was great fun. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who a) likes mysteries b) likes historical fiction c) wants the historical fiction to be intelligently connected to historical fact (unless one is reading historical fantasy like her After Cilmeri series where she brilliantly creates a different historical line - but that is another topic) and d) want a well written enticing history mystery book that moves at a spanking pace. Buy it for sure!

  • Chevalier

First of all I want to say I love historical fiction. I have enjoyed both Crouchback and Chevalier. I have enjoyed all the characters, especially Rhys, Catrin and Simon as they solve the murders around them and dwell into the lives of their suspects. It’s also a love story between Rhys and Catrin which I love. Great stories.

  • Well worth the read

The historical accuracy of Woodbury‘s novels is impressive. The fictional details only enhance the history she writes about. If you like Welsh history or want to learn something about it while reading fiction, this is your author!

  • Chevalair

Both books take us deep into attitudes of medival English, Norman and Welsh cultures in King Edward 1 times of conquest of Wales. With an added murder mystery around a King Arthur tournament gives added reading pleasure with relatable characters.
