  • Everyone should read this

This book is endlessly entertaining. A slow suspenseful burn that pays off at the end. I can't wait to dive into the next book!

  • SOVIET ERA PARANOIA MEETS SERIAL KILLER NOIR

This captures well the all encompassing the state-is- everything feel of 1950`s Soviet Russia .Combines a decent murder mystery with a picture of the Soviet Union which I feel many in the West are not familiar with .The characters are clearly a product of the then relatively recent Revolution and the even more recent World War . The privations caused by these events are the bedrock of the story and after a few slow points I enjoyed the story more as it progressed. Will try more Tom Rob Smith .

  • An excellent read for lovers of historical fiction

Set in Stalin's Russia this book tells the story of the hardships endured by people at this time. The start seems a bit disjointed but the story all comes together and in the process shows the fear of the ordinary people and the blind obedience of those in authority. The story is violent at times but heart warming at others. Will keep you turning the pages.

  • Child 44

This was better than I was expecting. Took a while to get into it but well worth a read. Will be interesting to see if the movie does it justice.

  • Child ... meh

This is the thriler Robert Harris thought better of writing. If you enjoy this novel, you'll enjoy Philip Kerr's Gunther stories more. The relationship dynamic between the two main protagonists keeps up the interest until the final third; this makes way for some unlikely plot-twists.
