  • Cold Burn of Magic

Lila Merriweather tried to keep out of all the power plays but a wrong choice has her stuck putting everything on the line for Devon Sinclair and it looks like she’s going to end up just like her mom in this exciting new fantasy. Lila Merriweather is an exceptional thief and she does just fine on her own and the reader can’t help but get drawn into this intriguing fantasy adventure as Lila makes the choice to save the life of a cute guy which results in the very thing she’s spent her life avoiding. The characters are strong, charismatic and grab the reader’s attention from the very beginning and the steady to faced plot keeps anticipation building with lots suspense, excitement and magic. The fascinating and magical town of Cloudburst Falls intrigues readers and captures them as easily as the tourist with its magic and promises of fairy tales but the tourist are clueless to the true happenings in the town of Cloudburst where rival Family members kill each other for power which builds lots of expectation and excitement throughout the story and of course the magical attacks and escalating danger adds thrills and chills as Lila tries to keep Devon safe and sound. The monsters in the town add spice and intrigue while manipulations, betrayals and unexpected surprises keep the readers guessing and the well written scenes and details capture the imagination and makes it easy for the reader to become completely immersed in the adventure. This is a young adult story so sorry there is no sex scenes although there is some flirtations and quite a bit of violence, magic and adventure with some emotional turmoil and a kick ass heroine that takes her licks and keeps on going, she’s got a bit of an attitude but she’s smart and she’ll sneak her way into your heart like a thief in the night and I can’t wait to find out what happens next. 4 1/2 STARS

  • Good , solid debut of a paranormal series for YA

Lila Merriweather is on her own ever since her mother's death and she tries to avoid involving other people's problems until the day she rescues Devon Sinclair from being killed. After that, she's coerced into working as a Devon's bodyguard for Sinclair's family. At the beginning , she tries not to be friendly with other people from Sinclair's family but she cannot help but like them and be protective of her new found friends. This book has a little bit of magic but not too overwhelmed and the main characters are likeable.

  • Fun!

I really enjoyed my re-read of this book! I had a lot of fun with this book the first time I picked it up and knew that I wanted to read it a second time before picking up the last book in the trilogy. I decided to give the audiobook a try for this re-read and that was a very good decision. I believe that I liked the book even more because of how the narrator brought the story to life. I love the way that we are introduced to the world that Lila lives in. It is similar to our world but the town that she lives in is filled with magic. Things in town are controlled by the mob-like families who are always trying to grab ahold of just a little more power every chance that they get. The magic system was really well done and I liked how each of the characters had their own unique abilities and it was fun to see them use them to their advantage. I really liked all of the characters in this story and found them all to be incredibly interesting and unique. Lila hasn't had things easy but has adapted and can handle most situations fairly well. Devon has a lot of responsibility and feels protective of the members of his family. Mo was fun and while I thought he was looking out for Lila, I was never sure if he should be trusted. There is a large cast of characters from the various families that really kept the story interesting. Brittany Pressley did a fantastic job with the narration of this book. I remember liking the book the first time I read it but during this re-read, I didn't want to put it down. She brought Lila and the rest of the characters to life and I thought that she did a wonderful job with all of the character voices. I would recommend this book to others. I think that Jennifer Estep has created a fun YA urban fiction series filled with a lot of excitement and great characters. I cannot wait to start the audiobook of the next book in the trilogy.
