COLD KILL by Pamela Cowan immerses the reader in the murder’s mind in the first chapter. I read the first paragraph at night, and decided to wait until morning as it was that disturbing. I had chills racing up and down my spine the entire time reading this book. The author is a master storyteller. If you are looking for a thriller look no further, think along the lines of Harlan Coben, Joseph Finder and Jonathan Kellerman. Kayla a former police officer received gunshot wound which left her an amputee. She has been retired out of the department to a desk job as a Parole Officer. She keeps her self physically fit and even joined a volunteer search and rescue team. I must say Ms. Cowan portrays the life of an amputee and shows the daily struggles they go through so the reader feels the pain and hardships. When a police friend’s wife and another’s girlfriend disappear without a trace the group of law enforcement friends forms a pact to hunt for the killer. Through their diligence they track down a suspect. But it’s too late for Kayla who is now in the killers sights. He kidnaps her. There is a harrowing chase by the killer, and it left me breathless urging Kayla onward through the Mountains. Kayla being an amputee ups the odds that she won’t make it out, and will be recaptured during the horrifying chase. The story is thrilling, the ending is satisfying, and I will read another book by this author for sure! The only reason you might want to put this Cold Kill down, is to make sure you locked your front door!
