    Journey Beyond Imagination

A genuinely spellbinding book! I found myself engrossed on two fantastic levels: First, the incredible intricacy and rich tapestry of the story itself. I felt that I was reading three or four very good and splendidly interwoven stories all at the same time. Secondly, I was absorbed by the incredible use of the English language, where at times dwarfed (but didn't obliterate) parts of the story itself.

    Really?

After really enjoying Player of Games, I was keen to give another of his books a go. However, after what was a strong start, weaving different threads of the story... I soon found myself wondering where this story was going. It was all over the place... too many tangents that didn't really contribute any value. I struggled towards the end, but persisted, hoping it would get better and finish strong. But sadly, no. I was left disappointed at what could have been a satisfying completion to the story, tying up a number of threads that had developed for some time. Instead, it was as if the author had a deadline to meet with his publisher and decided just to end it. I'm sure the author has other good books in the series... and maybe I will read another sometime. But for now, I think I will go find a good Peter F Hamilton book to help me restore my faith in SciFi.

Consider Phlebas an astounding good read

I must admit I raced through sections of the book as it took me on a roller coaster ride of suspense and tense excitement. Intergalactic espionage and intrigue at its best.

    Amazing space opera!

Enjoyable sci fi book from start to finish, the pace of the book is a nice constant which slightly slows towards the end to tie up important plot endings. The action is vibrant and imaginative. A very believable tale from across the stars. Looking forward to reading the next Culture novel!
