  • When is a sacrifice not a sacrifice?

Gorgeous story of Kate, her little sister Bo, and brothers Luke and Matt living by Crow Lake in Northern Ontario. A story of family, and of sacrifice, and of surviving a great tragedy. For those who love Elizabeth Strout.

  • A beautiful book

I read and loved Mary Lawson's The Other Side of the Bridge so had been looking forward to reading Crow Lake for a long time. I LOVE this author. Her characters are memorable, her scene setting vivid and immediate and her stories are poignant and moving. Crow Lake is a slow-burning, quiet and beautiful book. I found myself completely inside the small farming community in the wilderness of North Ontario. The book opens with a tragedy that completely transforms the lives of four siblings - two older brothers, Luke and Matt, a seven-year-old girl Kate (the narrator) and a baby, Bo, at the beginning of the book. We follow their lives and how they cope with the tragic loss of their parents, with their struggles with poverty and their determination to survive as a family unit. It is a story of love – but also of misunderstanding – indeed a misunderstanding that springs from love. The prose is beautiful, spare yet vivid. Highly recommended.
