  • Unique Fantasy Adventure

3.5 stars. Crown of Bones tells the story of a group on a journey to reach the Sacred Isle of Aku where initiate savants train their inner phantoms, but unrest in the realms threatens their success. There are three main POV characters. Ash, a non-savant scribe with a mysterious voice in her head, is tasked to record savant training. Marcus, Heir to throne of Baiseen, struggles to control his warrior phantom and his inner rage. Kaylin, a sailor with mysterious motivations, becomes the group’s guide early in their journey. This book has a lot going on. A unique and fascinating magic system, expansive and detailed world building, a daring journey, the mysterious Mar people, secret ancient texts, prophecies, telepathy, and war among the realms. However, the story may have too many pieces that don’t quite fit together to form a bigger picture yet. I think Crown of Bones could’ve benefitted from a little more backstory and focus. The story jumps from one thing to the next without clearly connecting the pieces. I wish this book would’ve dug a little deeper into one or two big ideas and saved some others to be explored in future installments instead of lightly brushing on so many different topics. It’s clear that the author has a master plan for the series, but the lack of depth makes this book feels a little unfinished to me, and the cliffhanger ending just intensifies that feeling. I enjoyed this book and I will definitely keep my eye out for book two, but on its own Crown of Bones left me with a lot of unanswered questions. Thank you to Entangled Teen for the eARC in exchange for an honest review.

  • One of the Best YA Fantasies I read!!!

Raise. Your. Phantom. What an amazing book!!! It is one of the best fantasy books I have read. I was invested in the story from the beginning and was pleased with the ending. Although it ended with a cliffhanger it was something that I look forward to in the next book. I love that the story is well written; the characters and the world-building are well developed. Some parts are entertaining and thrilling. Although it was presented in multiple POVs, the story has a spontaneous transition of events. It’s a story with a breath of fresh ideas, especially in the fantasy genre. A savant is someone who can raise a phantom and they are ranked according to their abilities. The ranks are designated with colors, the red robe being the highest. They serve and protect their respective realms. A phantom is an energy within the savant’s inner existence that takes form only when a savant shouts a battle cry and hits the ground. All initiate savants need to undergo training in the Sacred Isle of Aku where they are trained to control and work together with their phantoms. If one passes the training, he will be awarded a yellow robe. Our main characters are from Palrio, one of the realms of Amassia. Marcus Adicio, Heir to the throne of Baiseen (the seat of the throne in the realm of Palrio) needs to train and pass the initiation. A group that should have been five only, their journey to Aku was full of predicaments, hardships, and danger. It was an epic fantasy full of action-packed adventures, mythical creatures, slow-burn romance, friendship, deception, and unique magic. I love the detailed and captivating fight scenes. Of all the characters, I love Ash who despite being a non-savant proved her worth as a wordsmith and as a loyal friend to her companions during their perilous journey to Aku. She is smart, strong, and determined. I love the witty and funny banters she had with her inner voice. I think there will be a big revelation about one of the main characters in the next book. Kaylin, who are you? This is the first book I read from the author and now she’s on my favorite author's list. I would surely check out her other great works! I am so grateful to the author and Entangled Teen for this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

  • ....

After reading the synopsis of this book I was confused but intrigued and that's why I read it. After finishing it, I can certainly say that you should check it out because it's very very good. I loved the storyline and I loved the characters. Mysterious Kaylin is my favourite. He is at the same time dangerous and sweet. I also loved Ash and the dynamics she has with him. She is a smart and strong character with secrets even she doesn't know. Marcus is also smart and loyal. The friendship dynamics of the group were excellent. I liked the three POV narration (Ash, Markus & Kaylin) of the story and the author's writing. I found the world-building interesting and I want to learn more about it. The phantoms concept reminded me of the daemons in His Dark Materials series. The romance in the book was everything I wanted from it.

  • Brilliant start to the series

Great start for this YA fantasy book, I truly enjoyed reading this refreshing story, the world-building was fantastically done, the characters are terrific and I so need to find out what comes next. I definitely loved that the author gave us a different POV. Refreshing story with individual elements that makes this story so unique. The pacing was good you get dragged right from the start, and the ending, yes it's a cliffy so you will want to get the next one soon. I wish they do the audiobook it would be so good. Full of adventures, action, intrigue, and magic. You would love to get immersed in this new world.

  • A magical escape

This was the perfect read to help me escape my mind for a couple of hours. It's such a page-turner ... I mean it, if you're busy, maybe wait for a calmer day because one I got around 30% in I COULD NOT STOP. I have been craving a magical escape and this was a perfect read! The perfect mix of magic, romance, and adventure, I loved following the journeys of Ash, Marcus, and the aforementioned "handsome guide". There is such an interesting world built by A.K. Wilder only made cooler by the fact that she actually knows how to bone throw, which has clearly been an influence for this story. As for the plot, so much has happened, but without giving anything away I think Crown of Bones is the perfect start to the series and I can't wait for the next book! While I eagerly await to see what happens as the plot thickens, I am even more drawn in by the character development and the romance! So many things have just begun to reveal themselves I cannot wait for everything to unfold!
