Not sure how to review this book

Yes, Sebastian Barry writes beautifully but I cannot say without reservation that I enjoyed this book, and it took a long time to finish which is always a sign that I'm just not "getting into it". I also did not find the cross dressing credible for those times, especially in the army. I usually enjoy the winner of the Costa but not this time, disappointed.

    Days without end.

Very cleverly written. it required the mind to slow down to attune to the written word. at times it seemed that like the title the book would be without end.

Barry puts you in the heart of the civil war

This was a very good read. The language was exquisite. I truly admire Sebastian Barry’s command of English and how he portrayed life during the American civil war among uneducated immigrants through their speech and turns of phrase. Thomas McNulty was an adorable person through and through. As was John Cole and Winona too. This tale with me. Barry is truly gifted. This isn’t a book that can be picked up for a few pages at a time. It requires concentration and dedication. It is a wonderful read though. I highly recommend.
